While one of my biggest concerns since getting our SS would be how we could travel and be able to carry luggage without adding saddlebags or a trailer I think I have settled on a luggage rack, since mine has a roll cage it should be fairly easy to add and I think I have selected all the pieces that I will use but I would love to see if any of you have done this and if so can you post a few pics. Thanks.

My roll cage is a little different and while I know I want find one like I want made for a SS I am pretty resourceful in building stuff and I know I am not the only person to cross this bridge. So I am looking for pictures for inspiration on making mine, I am adding a picture showing the roll cage.

Batjac- I have a 16 SL w/ a TD roof w/ canvaas. I took a rack (basket from Amazon) I mounted the crossbars and shorten them and attached to frame. I then used the 4 mounting clamos and attached to the crossbars. This was about 3 years ago and have not removed them. You have two ways to take them off. I will try to attach pics. BTW- cost was less than $150.00. You can see in 2nd pic the clamps holding rack to crosbar.

Nice set up Robocop 1, this was my original idea as well, I am also toying with the idea of a hard topper that I would take on and off, mainly with it I was thinking that I wouldn't need water tight luggage or a cargo net, I didn't think the cross bars would latch on to the round bars so this is real interesting, anything you can share will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Thanks for your comment. There is another set up that fits both the roof frame and the rack. I'll attach pics of the parts. They can be found on Amazon. You will need 4 of each mounting brackets. each package contains 2 mounting brackets. These eleminate the cross bars. I thought of using the hard topper but it restricts size of what you can put in it. besides, you still need cross bars to hold the topper. Good luck on what ever your choice is. In regards to crossbars, the ones in my 2nd pic have been on for almost 3 years. I use the cargo net and it works great. Below are the mounting brackets that I consider using. Of course there are other brackets that may be more suited for your options. Rood racks (or baskets) come in different sizes but the max width is the narrows part of your roof frame.

Rider: Can you attach a pic of your set up? I have seen a few set ups with a rack extending past the rear panel. It looked good but overloaded. Overloading the rear end will obviously reduce the weight on the front steering wheels. (similiar to a semi tractor having too much weight on drive axiles) If you can move the platform rack forward, it would help.

JKH-Wish I could give you some inexpensive ideals but I can't. I have a 16 SL wigh a rack on top. But your GT has a factory built roof. (RIGHT?) There is a compartment storage bag, from SlingMods, is designed to conform to fit the storage compartment. (cost is $31.99 each) There maybe some GT owners that can give you some ideals. Until you get your storage issue resolved, I would suggest that you set out what you want to take then wait 4 hours and re-check what you laid out and then take only what you need. My wife and I use to do this when traveling on our Ultra classic. Amazing what you want to take doesn't always match what you need to take.:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:. Good Luck- If I see something that might help-I'll send to you. KEEP on SLINGIN' Happy Turkey Day

thankyou for the reply. our last trip on the ultra proved to the wife she can leave a lot at home. we will have to do some testing on how many pairs of undies does she really need, lol. at least she has told me to hold off on the trailer option.
thanks again.
