Started last year on last ride when fuel reached half a tank or so. Put sea foam in and fill it up and was good to go. first ride this year at a half of a tank same thing stuttering and want to shut off then sputtering. what I want to know is the fuel pump shot? How hard is it to replace?

First try another 1/2 can of Sea Foam and put some miles on it to see how that works.

But why is it at less than half a tank? Otherwise it runs fine.

Sometimes they just need to be driven....
It sounds like the fuel pick up is at fault, not sure how it is set up in the tank but I would suspect it is sucking fuel in above the lower pickup inlet where it should pick up fuel and when the level gets below the hole in a line, housing or fitting whatever it is. It starts sucking air causing stall until fuel is added over that point. I would research the sending unit and how it's made. This has been a problem with car and trucks mostly with plastic lines on the sending unit assembly.
There might be an in tank low pressure pump and a higher pressure pump by the motor. If the in tank pump fails, the second pump is likely able to pull gas until you get to some level if empty.
I had this happen with a 89 Bronco. The in tank pump failed and i never found out until i replaced the gas tank and it wouldn’t prime the fuel lines.
