Our first New 2023 Slingshot R - right angle drive noise!

Drove our new 2023 Polaris Slingshot (ordered December 26th) R manual home 190 miles from the dealer, 50F but no rain, dressed warm, and loved it. I snowmobile and off-road side by side so it was fine weather! It was the first time ever driving one.

I took the the secondary roads home with more stop signs, varying speeds, shifting, instead of setting the cruise at 75 all the way home on the expressway.

Pulling out of the dealers parking lot with .2 miles, easily shifting through the gears, I could hear a screech/howl sound. It does it "only" going through the gears whether gently or on the gas.

I've read all the forum entries on noises and watched every good YouTube video in anticipation on getting our first Slingshot.

I'm at 500 miles so I will change engine oil and filter, and I purchased some of the new Polaris RAD SAE 85W-250 oil which is the factory right angle drive fill, and will change it.

Does the right angle drive just have to break in or is this noise part of the Slingshot driving experience?

The belt alignment looks good.

We love our new toy!

Thanks for the great site!

Tom

Love the color, i hear alittle noise from mine, always have. It not bad at all. Im pretty sure some of the noise is belt noise, my harley makes some belt noise also, just cant hear it since im higher up and exhaust noise.

I can definitely hear the transmission and belt. I rather like it, fits with the vehicle I was wanting. Your description sounds like you’re talking about something else. You said its happening only while shifting.
Does this mean you don’t hear it when cruising down the road?
I only hear the squelching sound while shifting.

I agree that all the other normal Slingshot sounds make the Slingshot driving experience unique!

Does it do anything when you’re not moving?
If its not grinding, then the clutch is disengaged. And i don't feel like it would be the angle drive, cause that’s running all the time.
I think theres a clutch fluid reservoir. The mechanic pointed it out to me when I picked up ours, left side of the engine. I might’ve misheard him, cause its supposed to be a dry clutch. But maybe that’s low.

Im just over 300 miles on ours. A drive to the hardware store (10 miles away) took 2.5 hours and went around a lake. Good luck.

When in the Slingshot DO NOT try to bring home 'ice cream' --- it's OK to have some when your out riding.

It is a dry clutch, the reservoir is for the hydralic clutch pedal.

Welcome to the "Slingshot Insanity" Yes that noise is normal. My company uses right angle drives in our production machines and I hear the same noise my 2020 SL makes. This subject is an endless debate with everyone who owns one. My advice...Get a good set of mats with a full tunnel cover. It will cut down the heat and noise from the driveline. I have also seen folks put sound insulation inside the storage compartments.

red line heavy shockproof gear oil for the angle drive is the best I’ve ever used. It quitting it down and smooths out the clunking noise.

Gear noise is normal. I traded my ‘15 to a ‘19 SL and it had a horrible screeching sound as soon as I pulled out of the lot. They adjusted belt to no improvement. They changed the rear final drive and it corrected the problem. The noise was unbearable, it hurt my ears/hearing.
