Slingmods sells a hood extender for $235 and Slingshot only sells one just like the one All Things Slingshot sells for the same price $199.95. Does anybody know which one works better, the one from Slingmods or the one the other 2 sell for less? Steve

I have the MadStad hinge set (bought it used), now sold under the Twist Dynamics brand. It needs the gas cartridge to hold the hood open. @[email protected] said their hinge kit doesn't need the cartridge if you prefer to not use it (https://www.slingshotforums.com/threads/hood-opening-warning-on-polaris-slingshot.156865/page-2#post-764705). I ran into problems with the cartridge when I tried to adjust how the hood closed. Having loosened both hinge mounts, the cartridge pushed the entire hood out of alignment and I ended up re-installing the OEM hinges to fix the alignment. I still plan on trying to re-install the MadSatd/TD hinge kit, but if I run into problems again, I'll probably switch to the DDMWorks kit.
ZZPerformance also offers a hood hinge kit that doesn't even use a cartridge - Billet Hood Hinge Kit

That's good to know. Now that you mention it the hood is not real rigid and I can see where a light weight gas cartridge would be a problem. I'll just use the ones without the cartridge. I saw somebody in Eureka Springs this weekend had crome extenders. Do you know who makes those? Thanks Steve

My guess is the chrome hood hinges were a custom job by an owner. I used to have dual gas cartridges (one on both sides) to assist in opening the hood. I felt they balanced each other and didn't need to worry about any distortion from having all of the pressure on just one side.

The Madstad ones have issues with the hood alignment. I was told this by a slingshot mechanic, but bought them anyway. He was right. I ended up selling them and buying the DDM ones. No problems whatsoever now.

I second the DDM ones, solid with no wobble or misalignment

Now that I finally got my ZZP Hood Hinge kit properly installed with the set screws to the front above the hinge crossbar, I thought I'd update about my experience. I failed to properly tighten the setscrews/lock-nuts and the setscrews fell off, allowing my hood to literally touch the ground when opened. I contacted [email protected] and asked him what size setscrews they used and he told me they were 3/8-16, IIRC, and offered to send me replacements, but since I had lost them thru my mistake, I just bought some 3/8x1" bolts and lock-nuts locally. After having used the extended hood hinges for a couple months, I must say I am very happy with them and the easier under-hood access they allow. I bought mine during one of the major holiday sales events at 30% off, making them barely more expensive than the used set of MadStad/Twist Dynamics hinges I had tried previously. Here's a couple of pics -
20200723_143935.jpg As the pic shows, the 3/8x1" bolt provides just a little clearance above my garage floor. I recommend using a slightly longer (1.5-2" bolt) if you don't want it opening that close to the ground.
20200723_143926.jpg Under-hood access is much easier now, especially up front near the headlights and horn!
Looking at the second pic near the windshield, You can see I used a couple of hood springs I bought from an EBay seller. They ensure the hood pops up enough to clear the rear hood latches once I pop the hood latches and make it much easier to open my hood. I just need to make sure the hood is securely latrched before going on a ride!
Great set of hinges, especially if you catch them on sale!
