Cold Weather Riding Gear / Heated Clothing / Extended Riding [ heat / thermal ]

Colorado Springs was a brisk 47 degrees this morning...and for the first time ever...I was thankful for the cockpit heat. I would normally not ride any of my previous motorcycles in weather under 50 degrees, but thought I would be good in the SS. And yep...enjoyed the drive in to work. :)

The Slingshot offers a lot of wind protection in the cold. Much better than any 2 wheeled bike I have ever had.

I have ridden in 30 degree weather for 2 hours with just a full face helmet, good gloves, leather jacket and jeans, no problem with the cold. Would not attempt that on any of my bikes without having heated gear.

A full face helmet, leather jacket and gloves, if it it is too cold for that, take the CAGE!
I regularly drive my sling to work still and some mornings are on the brink of freezing cold. I wear a 3/4 Sena Mag-9 Helmet, hoodie and leather jacket, light gloves, and jeans. I am usually pretty toasty. I also have a fleece neck warmer, snow pants, and ski mittens in the storage compartment just in case. I don't see any cold weather situation where that wouldn't be enough.
The ride to Maggie Valley this morning temps. when I left the house was 53 deg. The temps. varied from 48 to 58 deg. Up and the whole 6 hours. Wasn't to bad, rode with the full face helmet all the way. No where to put it but on my head. Oh, there are a lot of bikes up here and me in the SS

Unplug some of the holes like I just did for the trip to Maggie Valley in the morning. Supposed to be 56 deg. in the morning. Low at Maggie will be low 50's.
If it where 50 in the morning I'd be wearing a t shirt. I live in the wrong part of the world.
The temps are dropping below freezing up here in the great white north. We're lucky enough to not have snow yet, but it is coming...

Does anyone have any tips on how to extend the riding season? I plan to ride the SS to work as long as I can (it's currently approaching 10 degrees below freezing in the mornings) and I'm sure there are others out there that are crazy like me. :)

Let's share tips on how to keep riding when the mercury drops!

10 below! Not quite ready for that.
Earlier this year I rode around in my snowmobile suit and a full face helmet when the temperatures were above 25°F but I doubt I would ride much colder than that. I absolutely wouldn't ride anywhere there could possibly be ice patches, slush, snow, etc on the road.

1. Check out some good motorcycle heated gear such as Gerbings. It can plug into the socket located between the seats.
2. Full face helmet.
3. Use good judgment whether or not to ride when there is the possibility of ice on the road.
High 80s today, always good motorcycle weather here in Florida...

On my trip this past weekend I was thinking about the snap in cockpit cover like snaps in around you ( kayak also ) or the old MG's. All you would need is unplug one hole in firewall to stay warm.

Did plenty of driving in the 20 degree range last winter, but the toy was new enough that I didn't care. Now I want a heater. It was 28 this morning, and there was no way I was taking the ss to work. We need to figure something out. I want to keep the fun going. On another note the SS does not like snow and ice. Found that out the hard way last winter. I've done the heated gear thing with bikes in the past, and I'm not a big fan of the heated gear.

Unplugging the holes is good once the vehicle is warmed up, but just another source of cold air until then.

I agree. The roads are still dry up here, at least for a little while longer. Although I'd be interested in hearing about people's experiences running winter tires, or even studded tires, on these machines.
Willy warmer (goes nicely with the assless chaps)...

I prefer this for my Willy Warmer but to each his own

We have the Tour master heated liners (jackets, chaps, socks, gloves) from our Goldwing. Have rode the Smokeys in 28 degree temps (Goldwing) Hooked plugs up to SS before our trip to Key West. Sounds funny saying that. Left at 47 degrees came back 12 days later to 48 degrees. Makes it nice and toasty. At temps in the 40-50's never felt any heat coming thru fire wall only cold air at speed. Burn you up in summer freeze you in winter. The Polaris way.:D:D
