Can Alpha Turbo be Shut Off ??

3842 Views 37 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  uglyrider954
My mechanic friend is helping me to install the turbo next week and I bought a boost controller w/ fail-safe (link below) so I can have it cut out the turbo if boost gets too high. Is there something that I can do to disarm the turbo or perhaps put in a different spring so the idiots at the dealership don't all go take it for a beat run when being serviced? There's tons of burnouts marks at the dealership lot from the guys messing around and I bet the whole staff will want to take it for beat run after learning it has a turbo. Makes me angry just thinking about it...

@uglyrider954 Sorry there is a blow off valve that will not let the boost exceed 6 PSI. Above 6 PSI and while decelerating the blow off valve releases pressure thus preventing problems. Henry at Alpha thinks of all the problems and has the turbo engineered to avoid them while making maximum HP. I do max burnouts etc frequently and the turbo in my sling has 13000 miles on it with no problems.
I'm going to have the 9psi natural spring installed so I'll be really pushing the limits of what the engine can handle. I just wanted to shut it off so the guys at the dealership can't beat on it when I bring it for service.
I'm looking for a VALET mode or something. It is possible?

I think he's going to up the BOV spring to a 9 lbs'er James.
Correct...
Before taking your Slingshot to the dealer, replace the BOV spring with the weakest one you can find. Minimized boost should hopefully equate to minimized potential temptation/damage. It should be relatively simple.

Ok I am prepared to take the hail of bullets flung my way but here I go anyway....why not find a dealer that you trust to take care of your equipment...

I wouldn't trust my brother taking it for a ride nevermind the tech guys who work on these all day long and have perhaps never seen one with turbo. Why wouldn't they all want to take it for a beat run? I see your point though of course.

Good Idea. I've had issues in the past that make me not trust anyone with my toys.

BKL do you mean wastegate spring?

Yes I'm sure he does and that's a really good idea.
inconspicuously pop off one of the charge pipes lol and no that wasnt serious. i do know when a charge pipe blows a connection it wont create much boost (did it a lot on my srt before i upgraded the clamps)
well technically it will create boost but it wont make it to the engine that is. probably bad for the turbo too.

Tell them under no circumstance will they road test the vehicle without you present. Write down the mileage and hopefully they call you and let you know when its ready.

I wouldn't mess with anything mechanically bc the tune and setup is good to go. You may cause more damage trying to play with it

Thats all fine and good except I can take my SS out of my garage and do a dozen burnouts in my street in less that 1/10th mile. :)

Hahaha always one in the group. The slingshot would travel less then 1/10th of a mile, but the tire will be spinning in excess of 40mph so the mileage would rack up quick. lol

True. I guess if we wanted to play the devils advocate we could say any tech would know how easy it is to pull the VSS connector and do burnouts all day long with zero miles showing.

A stretch I know. But I am with Ugly, I would love to have a valet key that just cuts things back or better yet just turn the turbo off. Do I distrust techs? No. Do I understand human nature and curiosity? Yep.

valet would be sweet, could just retard timing and rpms, the turbo would never even spool.
