Indiana does not require a helmet. Was thinking of traveling to Illinois and Michigan. Are you wearing a helmet in either of those two states? thanks

Governor signs Mississippi autocycle bill
Publish Date:
Mar 30, 2015
JACKSON, Miss. - Gov. Phil Bryant has signed into law a bill exempting autocycles from Mississippi’s helmet and motorcycle license endorsement requirements, according to the Jackson Clarion Ledger.
The law describes an autocycle as “a motorcycle with three wheels enclosed with a roll cage or rollbar and equipped with automotive controls and seat belts.”

The bill, which failed last year, was backed by Elio Motors.

Outlaw... inexpensive and a lot of styles. I picked up a couple of these for out of state ride, though I haven't had to use them yet: http://www.amazon.com/Outlaw-V5-05-...&qid=1438603966&sr=8-7&keywords=outlaw+helmet

I figure within a year or so though, the Slingshot should be either classified or clarified to not need a helmet.
Outlaw on Amazon has a NICE 1/2 helmut DOT real carbon fiber really lite sells for $100 but well worth it due to lite weight
Got pulled over for no Helmet in California on a backroad. (Always wore it on the highway only).

Didn't get a ticket because I work for a division of the Sheriff's Department, and told him I honestly thought it would qualify for the 3 wheel enclosed vehicles, but he said they all got briefed on the slingshot when it came out and knew it required a helmet.

We should definitely have the option on this unique vehicle.

Do they have clear definitions listed on the state law about what makes it enclosed? I haven't looked at CA law yet. I was just wondering what the actual wording is?
Just got stopped the other day here in New Jersey. Showed the officer the Motor Vehicle manual which states the exemption for enclosed with glazing. He let me go. 30 minutes later he shows up at my front door asking to see the manual again because he looked online and could not find the exemption and had spoken with his Traffic Supervisor who confirmed a helmet is required. Took photos of the book and said he will research further and let me know. He came back two days later and told me they contacted State officials who confirmed that helmets are required. He said his personal opinion is that the Slingshot should NOT require a helmet since his interpretation of enclosed should apply to the Slingshot. He is a motorcycle rider and said personally he would contest it if he were ever stopped for no helmet in one.
The applicable code section for the exemption in NJ is (last sentence is dispositive):

Title 39 - MOTOR VEHICLES AND TRAFFIC REGULATION
Section 39:3-76.7 - Protective helmets

Universal Citation: NJ Rev Stat § 39:3-76.7 (2013)

39:3-76.7. Protective helmets
6. a. No person shall operate or ride upon a motorcycle unless he wears a securely fitted protective helmet of a size proper for that person and of a type approved by the director. Such a helmet must be equipped with either a neck or chin strap and be reflectorized on both sides thereof. The director is authorized and empowered to adopt rules and regulations covering the types of helmets and the specifications therefor and to establish and maintain a list of approved helmets which meet the specifications as established hereunder. For the purposes of this section, motorcycle shall not include any three-wheeled motor vehicle equipped with a single cab with glazing enclosing the occupant, seats similar to those of a passenger vehicle or truck, seat belts and automotive steering.

It's the glazing part that'll get ya. The windshield is not glass, or in a frame.
We put a top on ours from Bullet Speed. Now my helmet is in a bag and is my new arm rest. We still keep our half helmets in the SS but we haven't put them on since we put our top on. We ride allot. 6,000 miles is four months. Have passed troopers in five or six states. Not even a question so far. I'm not a fool. Only takes one A**whole. We will always keep a pair of half helmets with us. In cooler weather we might wear full faced helmets just to keep warm (you know, cool mornings, and cool nights).
What we find interesting in the whole helmet debate is that many folks wear a helmet just because the law says they must. Others don't wear a helmet just because the law says they do not have to, or just to be defiant of the law.

Are these really good reasons for choosing to wear, or not to wear, a helmet?

Actually, this is a good reason..The American Academy of Neurosurgeons has already weighed in on this and they NEVER recommend the use of a helmet when NOT USING A HANS device, while restrained, as in "wearing a shoulder/lap belt". Forces on the neck are increased 40 fold in both frontal and rear impact crashes, nearly assuring death of the driver when the added weight of a helmet is added to the driver's head. Unfortunately, our legislatures are so short sighted, most have not addressed this issue, and won't until they are sued for INCREASING chance of injury/death by REQUIRING a helmet when driving a 3 wheeled vehicle equipped with seat/shoulder belts.

Which vendor has a nice half helmet?
Been looking at picking up a couple of Sena Calvary Half Helmets for the bride and I. They get crazy good reviews and come with Sena S10 commo sets for talking and blue tooth music / phone.

We actually switched to very light novelty helmets to get us past persnickety cops but not have all the mass on our necks. They weigh about 1/5 the weight of our full-face helmets.
6750 miles in Alabama and Tennessee and no problems at all without a helmet. I have asked multiple troopers and they say they have NO problems as long as the seatbelt is fastened. And I ride with multiple city police and they all have no problems with it. And I have let two circuit judges drive it and they have no problems with it. They have also looked at the paperwork I have in my glovebox and agree that is fine as an "enclosed cabin". They also told me I need to keep the Tennessee paperwork stating that its OK for you to not wear a helmet in an "enclosed" and a "fully enclosed" three wheel motorcycle.

The TN law is where I base the justification for Alabama saying its OK with an "enclosed" cabin. If Alabama had said only "fully enclosed" then technically I would have no argument.

As one official said " its a subjective exemption". And I like that because that means were both correct.

Everyone do what they feel is safe and legal for them. Ill do what I want with my baseball cap on and my 4 point harness strapped tightly.

If I leave out for the day and I'm going to be riding the twisty turns as hard as I can I absolutely put a full face helmet on. If I'm headed to eat or just go sightseeing then its a baseball cap for me.
Good to know , be careful in GA, i was informed by a Cobb County Sheriff that helmets are required in the slingshot no matter what. I have a Bullet canvas top and a F1+5 windshield. He let me go with an education on Ga helmet laws. A lot of gray areas
A few months back we were visiting a neighboring state and were having lunch in a park when a very nice local law enforcement officer stopped by to chat with us. During our pleasant conversation of course discussion about helmets came up where a statement he made just got stuck in my head, "If a rider wants to attract a law enforcement officer's attention, simply ride without a helmet!", obviously leaving the rest for us to read between the lines! ;)
