3 Slingshotting Helmet Questions

For those of us who DO wear a helmet while driving our Slingshots, here are three questions.

1. Which one do you wear, or wear most if you have multiple options?
2. Why did you choose it?
3. If you were buying a new helmet for your Slingshotting, what would you choose today and why? I realize that looks like four questions, but four is too many, so...

I had an HJC but when I went to buy a matching helmet, they were discontinued. Bought a pair of Scorpion EXOs.

Bought them because they were red and black, and matched my Sling. :)

Actually, I did buy it because it matched, but I wanted a full face modular. These models also have a built-in sun shade that flips down when needed. I like being able to flip the face up to talk or get some fresh air.

When the face is down and the sun shield is down, the young girls can't see the gray mustache and beard.....
Most important thing with a helmet...wear one that is comfortable for 'you'. I wear a 3/4 helmet with a tinted pull down face shield.
If ya gonna wear a helmet choose the most light weight and comfortable one that you can afford. You do not have to give up safety to get rid of the weight but sometimes it costs more.
Find one that is light. It prevents neck fatigue and because you are seatbelted with a stationary torso your head will accelerate separate from your body. Don't let the weight of the helmet separate your head from your body too.
I like the AFX FX-200. It comes in many colors, only weighs 1kg. and It has dual eyes sheilds so you don't have to wear goggles.
It can be found for as low as $50.

Don't usually wear a helmet since I have a MadStad 13" Adjustable windshield, but I do have a few half-helmets that either have screw-on eye-shields or internal drop-down eye-shields. These meet the helmet laws in other states while also providing eye protection from rain , bugs and other airborne debris.

Scorpion Eco 1/2 helmet, very comfortable for my shape head, reasonable cost, like the flip down shades, fits my Sena Bluetooth nicely. Also own a HJC Flip but stopped wearing it, thought is is too much over kill for SS. Use a MC mask for cooler weather. Owned many helmets over the years the Scopion is my alltime favorite. It's almost like wearing nothing at all.:)

Bell Pit Boss. Lightweight DOT approved 1/2 helmet with visor, flip down tinted shield and zip on/off ear muffs. The sun shield is nice since when you enter the shade you can quickly flip it up and when you enter the sun you can quickly flip it down. Better than sunglasses. The ear muffs are nice for the cooler days and months but remove easily in warmer weather. They fit our Sena headsets nicely so we can easily converse. I will buy another one if I grow another head! $130.
Thanks, folks! Keep 'em coming! (I was really asking more about what we were actually wearing than what we might like. I kinda like the Jarvish, but with tax and 35% off, it's still over $900, plus shipping. That will buy gas for miles of smiles!)
what ever you get make sure to look at this first.... the tag on your helmet tells you :
date of manufacture.. never get a helmet older than 6 month of that date, helmets are make to last at least 5 years, if you get a helmet that been at the show room for months and it been at sun light it can break faster than a one that been in storage. if the helmet been drop it no longer can protect you as one that never been drop.. with that on mind i never get a helmet from the show room.... the helmet need to fit you snuggle if 1 finger get between head and foam thats the max.. remember is your head that will spin around if helmet to loose. if helmet too tight will give you headache. all helmets most be replace about 5 years no matter what people said.. I know some people are short in money but sorry it most.

I am still new to wearing a helmet while riding, but I have to confess: I never knew that helmets had an expiration date! It sounded fishy to me, so I did a little poking around. It's true! Here is just one of many good articles on the subject. Helmet Fact vs. Ficion: How Often to Replace? - Eagle Leather - Lakewood Thanks, hrca0434sc!

I have a Top and a tall windshield and only wear a helmet where required when in my Slingshot (not required at my age here in Texas). As far as I'm concerned, with the roll hoops, Top and tall windshield, the only real purpose a helmet serves is head & eye protection from flying road debris and bugs. I keep a helmet or two in a storage bag in the passenger storage compartment and therefore don't worry about sun exposure damaging or weakening my helmet(s). I'll probably replace them as they reach around 5 years old or sooner if I find a sale price I like. Not really concerned about expiration, though.

I have 2 helmets. the one I wear most is a carbon fiber 1/2 helmet that when I bought was billed as the smallest and lightest DOT helmet made. My second helmet is a Bell Vortex full face helmet I mostly use this when the weather gets very cold or if its raining allot.

I live in California so here a helmet is not optional and if I had to do it again I would probably pick these same helmets

here is a link to the 1/2 helmet SOA inspired DOT Beanie Carbonator Flat Black With Peak

and the picture

and this is what my Bell Vortex looks like

In softer terrain those roll hoops are going to dig in, in rougher terrain the landscape and flora is still going to enter the passenger compartment...........so........

.............this is how I chose the helmet that I am wearing. I visualized that piece of debris getting kicked up in front of me as it passes over, (like it did with Justina already), or through, that plastic windshield, or imaging rolling upside down with my head bouncing over rocks, trees, whatever, and consider if the helmet that I am wearing is going to protect my whole head? Both Justina and I wear full face modular helmets..............................

Bell Mag 9 Sena (
). I love the nice integration with my Sena headsets, the visor set-up and the look.

I usually don't wear a helmet unless I cross the state line to CA. I picked up my SS in California and drove it home. I took my full face modular with when I flew into LA. Here's the problem. I had plenty of roof clearance on my GT until I tried to take a drink of water. My modular lifted up and hit the top. I couldn't lift it high enough to get my water bottle in my mouth. So, my next trip to CA will be a 3/4 since I have one of those. I don't have to lift anything up but will bring a straw just in case. I was never a fan of half shells but I am sure they would be just as comfortable as a 3/4. When I buy a new helmet, it will be a 3/4. I do love the Sling Shade though and for those of you that don't have any sort of a cover, it must really get hot!

I live in Palm Springs Ca, my sling is my daily driver some days its has hit 121on my ride home twice this week and from late May until mid Sept it will be well over 100 every day.

I actually have 5 tops. they are nice white long sleeve moisture wicking tops and they keep me pretty comfortable - my wife and I have talked about a top for the sling, but she wants nothing to do with it - thinks it goes against every reason we bought the sling in the first place - - and when you get right down to it I think she is right - as to the helmet see my post above the little 1/2 helmet I have is about as close to no helmet as you can get in a DOT helmet

I think it is important to note it doesn't have to be an either/or situation.

Depending on the weather/forecast my Stinger roof is either being used for shade/rain, carried on the back in case of extreme weather or sitting in the shed.

I initially bought my roof for shade. Didn't really like the idea of a roof but didn't like the sun beating down on me in an enclosed vehicle ( I know some of you don't think it's enclosed, but to me sitting in the hot sun it sure felt enclosed to me), and no air conditioning. Unlike a motorcycle where you catch the wind, there's no catching even a breeze in the SS, just roasting.

There was only one roof that I thought looked good on the SS and allowed me to remove and install it easily and also carry it with me. Thereby also giving my SS three different looks, the Roadster, the Coupe and when I am carrying it with me, the Beetle look. i.e. the top looks like beetle wings when carrying it on the back. Never thought that I would consider a roof as one of my top three mods, but I do.
