Three-wheeled vehicles don’t roll easily into existing Kansas motor vehicle laws, so a pending bill would create a new classification: the autocycle.

House Bill 2044 rolled through the House last month on a 122-0 vote and awaits action in the Senate.
The Kansas legislation is moving forward as Elio Motors, with offices in Phoenix, Arizona, and a production plant in Shreveport, Louisiana, prepare production of three-wheel autocycles.

Elio Motors Inc. has taken about 40,000 reservation orders and hopes to deliver the first of the small vehicles in 2016.

The $6,800 Elio autocycle weighs about 1,250 pounds and has two front wheels and a third wheel in the rear. The vehicle seats two people: The passenger sits directly behind the driver, and there is only one door. The vehicle runs on gas and can surpass the legal 75-mile-per-hour limit on Kansas highways. It gets an estimated 84 miles per gallon on the highway, according to the company.

As a prelude to the rollout, Elio and its backers are seeking changes in state laws so drivers aren’t required to obtain a motorcycle license to drive the autocycle or wear a helmet.

Jeff Porter, Norton, is an Elio enthusiast, and it was his state representative, Rep. Travis Couture-Lovelady, R-Palco, who spearheaded and helped draft House Bill 2044.

Porter and Couture-Lovelady provided testimonty to the House Transportation Committee, as did Joel Sheltrown, vice president of governmental affairs for Elio Motors. Sheltrown is a former Democratic state legislator in Michigan.

Equipped as a car

“This bill is important,” Porter said in his written testimony, because it would enable drivers of the Elio autocycle to be on the road with a driver’s license.

Motorcycle driving skills are not needed when driving an autocycle, Porter stated.

We are making great progress in swiftly resolving the stop ride service bulletin. To date, over 50% of consumer owned Slingshots impacted have been updated with the necessary service work. However, we need your help in updating the remaining 50% of impacted Slingshots. If you haven’t already done so, please contact your dealer to schedule a service appointment as soon as possible. Please refrain from operating your Slingshot vehicle until the necessary updates are completed. Upon completion of all safety bulletins, Polaris will automatically extend your factory warranty 60 days.

Polaris is working overtime to catch up to the incredible demand for Slingshot. Fortunately, our February shipments are significantly ahead of schedule and we are on track to beat our March shipment schedule, too. The result is faster than expected vehicle deliveries, and shipment dates are improving. Additionally, we are working to increase production capacity which will also shorten our shipment timelines. Please know we are working diligently to accelerate shipments. We thank you in advance for continued patience.

For Slingshot Owners
Every replacement part has been shipped from Polaris to local dealers, and many owners have already had the service updates completed for their vehicle. If you haven’t already done so, do ensure that you have scheduled a service appointment with an authorized Slingshot dealer. For your safety, please refrain from operating a Slingshot vehicle until the necessary updates are completed. As a reminder, Polaris will add 60 days of additional warranty for your Slingshot to demonstrate our quality confidence and to assist with your overall satisfaction. We will take care of the paperwork after you have the service updates completed, and no action is required by Slingshot owners to receive this warranty extension.

For those that have Purchased or are Considering Purchase
Factory production is back on track and continues to ramp-up. This past week Polaris provided dealers with future shipment dates for existing orders. It will take multiple weeks for Polaris to fulfill the strong quantity of existing orders. Please know that everyone at Polaris is literally working overtime to maximize production output to expedite delivery of your Slingshot.

We are happy to report that as of today, 100% of the replacement parts for customer owned Slingshot vehicles have already shipped from Polaris to local dealers. Meaning ALL registered Slingshot owners should be able to schedule your service update, if you haven’t already done so.

As a reminder, safety and quality are the highest priority for Polaris. Please refrain from operating any Slingshot vehicle until the necessary updates are completed. Contact any authorized Slingshot dealer to schedule your service appointment.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the Stop-Ride announcement. To assist with your overall satisfaction, and to demonstrate the confidence we have in our quality, Polaris will add an additional 60 days of factory warranty to ALL registered Slingshot vehicles that have been impacted by the Stop-
Ride. This 60 day warranty extension will automatically be added to your existing vehicle warranty. No action is required by Slingshot owners to receive this warranty extension.
