No need for a Motorcycle license either!

Starting July 1, citizens of Connecticut will be able to legally purchase and register their three-wheeled Polaris Slingshot. Last Friday, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy signed a law that puts the Slingshot into a new category of vehicles, the "Autocycle." This also will enable the Department of Motor Vehicles to other three-wheeled vehicles, such as the Elio, T-Rex and Morgan.

Apparently, however, consumer demand is far out weighing the state supply. "They're so popular. Its going to be forever before I get one in," said the owner of Libby's Motorworld, a Slingshot dealership in New Haven, Conn. He predidcted that he wont see a Polaris Slingshot in his dealership until August, and that it might very well be a 2016 model.

Despite the supply/demand issues, the DMV will begin licensing autocycles on July 1. One of the biggest differences between motorcycles and autocycles will be that you wont need a "M" classification on your license to operate an autocycle.

Part of the reason why the bill was passed was that lobbyists were able to promote the benefits to the State, including increased revenue from sales tax and property tax, and increased activity for dealers. Additionally, Alinabal Inc. of New Millford, Connecticut, makes many components for the Slingshot, including "stabilizing linkage, ball joints, outer tie rods and steering gear."

This is the definition of an autocycle, according to Connecticut law: a motorcycle derivative that “(A) does not have more than three wheels in contact with the ground, (B) is designed to be controlled with a steering wheel and foot pedals for acceleration, braking or shifting, (C) has a seat or seats that are fully or partially enclosed and in which the occupants sit with their legs forward, and (D) is equipped with safety belts…”

The bill was approved last month by the House in a 144-0 vote and approved 34-0 by the Senate.

was doing some research, GM only made so many engines (ECOTEC) and multiple companies have been purchasing leftover engines, the question is will GM build more? i hear rumors that there is a possibility of a new engine for next year? any thoughts on this? i have been told from some birdies flying in the sky that cosmetically for 2016 the SS will stay the same but what will be new are, Colors, Tweaks...and a new engine?

To our passionate Forum members,

Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm for Slingshot! It has always been our goal to get Slingshot owners on the road in all states and provinces across North America as soon as possible. We are pleased to announce that Slingshot is now approved for sale in the State of Texas!

On Friday, May 22nd, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill allowing the Polaris Slingshot to be registered and operated as an ‘autocycle’ in the state of Texas. The new bill took effect immediately, meaning Texas residence can now title Slingshot in the State of Texas.

Below is an overview of bill:
  • Senate Bill 449, sponsored by Senator Paul Bettencourt (District 7) & Representative Larry Gonzales (District 52)
  • Vehicle type: Autocycle

"Autocycle" means a motor vehicle, other than a tractor, that is: (1) designed to have when propelled not more than three wheels on the ground, (2) equipped with a

steering wheel, (3) equipped with seating that does not require the operator to straddle or sit astride the

seat; and (4) manufactured and certified to comply with federal safety requirements for a motorcycle
  • Titling: An autocycle is considered to be a motorcycle
  • Operation: Automobile driver license
  • Insurance: Same requirements as two-wheel motorcycles
  • Damage: Slingshot is subject to motor vehicle damage disclosure requirements
  • Seatbelts: Occupants must adhere to all seatbelts laws required for passenger cars
  • Helmets:
Required by law under age 21. Over age 21, riders are not required to wear a helmet with proof of successful completion of rider training or hold medical insurance covering injuries resulting from a motorcycle accident

Effective date: Immediately

Registrants will receive a motorcycle license plate, but can operate Polaris Slingshot with an automobile license. Additionally, our recommendation is that all Slingshot drivers and passengers should wear a...

Do you guys remember the "PINKS" TV show? The show where Rich Christensen would line up racers at a drag stip and they would race each other for pink slips. and then later, they did "PINKS: All Out" where racers would compete in brackets for cash prizes? The show ran on SPEED and also on FOX for a minute. It was canceled years ago, and the concept bounced around for a little while. Well, Rich has acquired the concept from FOX and is bringing it back!

The owner of Rockingham Dragway in North Carolina is going to open up his raceway for a July 4th celebration of raw power, shiny paint, and testosterone. The dragway will host the PINKS crew for a taping during the July 4th weekend.

Now, you might be asking why I am telling you about a television show that is taping in NC. Well, our little site here has been extended a personal invite from Rich and Brian Bossone. They have offered a 20% racer registration discount code when you sign up for the weekend. Simply add PAO in the checkout and you will receive the discount.

They are doing a grassroots promotion of this event as they don't have a large buget to get this thing off the ground. I think it is pretty cool that they are reaching out to the forum to go straight to the car enthusiast source.

This year is a TEST for future shows, and they need all the racer and fan support they can get. Support this event and maybe next season will be coming to track near you. They will be leaving room for group gathering areas or self run car shows at the show as well. It should be a great weekend for car enthusiasts!

I, for one, hope that they keep the show about racing and don't let it devolve into the drama-fest that the old show ended up being about.

“The fact that racers and fans still want PINKS is both an honor and extremely ...humbling,” Christensen said. “Their unwavering passion...
