WASHINGTON, D.C. - Polaris is recalling more than 9,000 2015-16 Slingshot vehicles because the headlight relay may fail, causing a loss of headlight capability while riding.

Involved are the following:
  • Slingshots manufactured from April 21, 2014 to Oct. 22, 2015,
  • Slingshot SL models made from April 28 to Oct. 23, 2015, and
  • Slingshot SL SE models manufactured from Dec. 15, 2014, to Oct. 22, 2015.
"In conditions of high underhood heat, the amperage rating for the headlight circuit relay may become marginal," Polaris reported. "In addition, the temperature at the female terminal pin is higher than what is desired. These two issues can cause the relay to fail intermittently and/or cause the wiring at the relay to become damaged. These issues could cause the headlights to intermittently or completely turn off while the vehicle is in operation."

The first indication that a problem exists is that the headlights may intermittently flash on and off for brief periods of time, and then otherwise operate normally, the OEM told NHTSA. "This can continue for quite some time before the headlight circuit becomes damaged enough to completely shut the headlights off," it noted.

Total number of vehicles affected, according to Polaris: 9,182. Polaris estimates that 8 percent of the total have this defect.

Polaris is notifying owners. Dealers are asked to replace the single headlight relay with a circuit that uses two headlight relays, free of charge. The recall (Polaris No. SLI-15-05; NHTSA campaign No. 15V777000) is expected to begin Dec. 4.

"Everyone loves a great American comeback story. In addition to building Indian and Victory motorcycles, the flexible factory assembles a new three-wheeled product called the Slingshot, which is a cross between a motorcycle and a roadster. Assemblers will also soon begin building a new all-electric motorcycle called the Empulse TT.

Scott Wine, chairman and CEO of Polaris, credits that phenomenal success to an aggressive product development strategy and an operational excellence initiative."
